About the Department of Homeland Security Investigations
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is the principal investigative arm of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Operating as a critical component of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), HSI is tasked with investigating, disrupting, and dismantling terrorist, transnational, and other criminal organizations that threaten or seek to exploit the customs and immigration laws of the United States.
At its core, HSI focuses on criminal activities arising from the illegal movement of people, goods, and money into, within, and out of the country. This broad mandate means its agents investigate a vast array of serious offenses. Key areas of focus include human trafficking and smuggling, narcotics and weapons smuggling, transnational gang activity, financial crimes, cybercrime, and export enforcement issues. HSI is also responsible for investigating human rights violations, art and antiquity theft, and protecting critical infrastructure industries vulnerable to sabotage, attack, or exploitation.
To execute its expansive mission, HSI operates with a massive global footprint. The agency employs more than 10,400 individuals, which includes over 7,000 highly trained special agents. These personnel are strategically deployed across a wide network, operating out of more than 200 cities throughout the United States. Furthermore, HSI maintains a strong international presence in nearly 50 countries worldwide, facilitating cross-border cooperation.
Beyond direct criminal investigations, HSI oversees international affairs operations and specialized intelligence functions. By collaborating closely with domestic law enforcement partners and global authorities, HSI serves as a vital shield, playing an indispensable role in safeguarding national security and advancing public safety against complex threats.
