The Mississippi Secretary of State official seal plaque
About: The Mississippi Secretary of State official seal plaque

It represents both the state’s historical legacy and its modern values, serving as a powerful emblem of sovereignty. As the constitutional custodian of the Great Seal, the Secretary of State ensures its proper display and reproduction on official plaques, typically crafted from rich mahogany, high-density urethane, or cast bronze for executive buildings.

The design’s uniqueness lies in its detailed heraldry and recent evolution. At the center of the plaque stands a proud American eagle with wings fully displayed, symbolizing strength and national unity. The eagle’s breast features a distinctive shield adorned with eleven vertical red and white stripes and a blue chief containing eleven five-pointed stars, representing the state. In its talons, the eagle grasps an olive branch and a bundle of three arrows, a classic dichotomy reflecting a desire for peace paired with the readiness for defense.

What truly sets the modern plaque design apart is its bottom margin. In 2014, the Mississippi legislature uniquely mandated the addition of “IN GOD WE TRUST” below the eagle. Framed by “THE GREAT SEAL OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI,” this contemporary modification bridges historic nineteenth-century heraldry with modern legislative intent, creating a distinctly Mississippian artifact.
